When VeriFone acquired Hypercom last year, regulators in Spain and the U.K. insisted that Hypercom assets in those countries be sold off.KleinPartners Capital, a private equity firm, bought those businesses, combined them, and created a new company called Spire Payments.

Spire holds the intellectual property rights in the U.K. and Spain to two Hypercom product ranges — Optima and Artima. It shipped 172,400 of those devices in the U.K. and Spain last year. However, Spire is not allowed to sell those products in other markets. It also must look ahead to the time when it will need updated technology for its installed base.

Spire plans to meet both needs through a joint product development deal with China-based Newland Payment Technology Company. Newland has also taken a minority equity position (less than 15%) in Spire. Last year Newland, which ranks tenth in the world among POS terminal manufacturers, shipped 242,800 POS terminals — 97% went to customers in Asia/Pacific. Other units went to customers in the Middle East/Africa, Europe, and Latin America regions.

Spire signed the agreement with Newland in May. The first products will be on the market in the second quarter of 2013, beginning with a GPRS/Wi-Fi device for restaurants. The migration of installed Hypercom terminals in Spain and the U.K. to the new devices will also begin next year. In 2014 when five new models will be available, Spire plans to begin sales in new markets through local resellers.
